As directed by His Excellency Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Benue State Ministry of Works has carried out an inspection of access roads leading to the oil field at Opialu in Okpokwu Local Government Area, with the clear objective of facilitating the opening of the field for oil exploration activities.
The inspection team, which included Engr. Wombo, Engr. Mahamed of Gatami Enterprise and his survey team, visited the site to assess the condition of the existing routes and determine the scope of work required to make them suitable for heavy equipment and sustained operational use. The exercise forms part of the preparatory steps needed before full-scale exploration can begin at the location.
Upon arrival, the team was warmly received by Chief Hon. Adah Mathew Inalegwu, the Executive Chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area, who welcomed the initiative and expressed support for efforts aimed at unlocking the economic potential of the area through oil exploration.
According to details from the visit, a preliminary survey is already in progress. The survey is expected to provide critical data that will guide the design and eventual construction of improved access roads. Once completed, the findings will pave the way for the commencement of construction work, ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is put in place to support exploration activities at the Opialu oil field.
The move underscores the state government’s interest in creating enabling conditions for the development of the oil resource in Okpokwu. By prioritising access road improvements under the directive of Governor Alia, the Ministry of Works is taking a practical step toward preparing the site for the next phase of activity. Stakeholders in the area are watching the process closely as the preliminary survey advances and plans for construction take shape.
