In a classic case of technology outsmarting crime, a would-be thief was caught red-handed on CCTV while attempting to break into a shop at Gyado Villa in Makurdi, Benue State. The incident, which occurred recently, led to the swift arrest of the suspect by operatives of the E Division Police Station.
According to a viral social media post by D’naked Elder Zege’Orkwa, the individual was captured on camera trying to force his way into the premises. Unbeknownst to him, the shop owner had installed a functional CCTV system that recorded every move. The footage, now circulating online, shows the suspect’s failed attempt, highlighting how modern security measures are increasingly becoming a deterrent to petty crimes in urban areas.
The post humorously noted the suspect’s apparent motives, stating, “The aim isn’t much, just to buy smart phone, get data, drinks or drugs, get high and insult people on social media.” It went on to mock the irony of the situation: “They went to break into a man’s shop not knowing his CCTV was recording them. Poor boy! Them go learn.”
The arrest underscores a growing trend in Benue State where business owners are adopting surveillance systems to protect their properties amid rising concerns over insecurity. Local police have commended the use of CCTV, with sources indicating that such evidence significantly aids investigations and ensures quicker apprehensions.
Residents have reacted with a mix of amusement and approval, with many praising the shop owner’s foresight. “In this Benue State POS yahoo boys, criminals are in trouble,” the post concluded, reflecting a sentiment that technology is leveling the playing field against criminal elements.
Authorities have urged more businesses to invest in security cameras, emphasizing that prevention through visibility remains one of the most effective tools in crime reduction. The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
