Benue State Celebrates 65th Independence with Renewed Commitment to Progress

Benue State joined millions of Nigerians today to mark the 65th anniversary of the nation’s independence, a milestone celebrated with pride, resilience, and a unified spirit. In a heartfelt message, the state’s leadership called on its people to renew their commitment to unity, purpose, and destiny, emphasizing hope and strength amidst challenges.

Governor Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia highlighted significant strides in the state’s development, including reforms in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and industrialization. Key achievements include the renovation of over 354 schools, employment of more than 9,000 qualified teachers, and the transformation of Fr. Adasu University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, into a medical tourism hub. Infrastructure projects feature the repair and construction of vital roads, two underpasses in Makurdi and Gboko, and the upcoming Otukpo overpass, alongside fixed water works in Otukpo and Otobi.

The governor also outlined efforts to enhance agriculture with improved seeds and fertilizers, reinforcing Benue’s status as the nation’s food basket. Additionally, programs like the training of 10,000 individuals in ICT and 40,000 civil servants in digital tools aim to boost service delivery and entrepreneurial opportunities. New industries, including the Benue Fruit Juice Factory and Food Basket Breweries, are set to create jobs and enhance the state’s rich resources.

Reflecting on the occasion, the leadership paid tribute to fallen heroes and acknowledged the efforts of past leaders like Aper Aku and Gen. Atom Kpera, whose groundwork has paved the way for today’s progress. The message underscored the ongoing journey toward a new Nigeria, with Benue collaborating with the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for inclusive growth.
