In a violent clash, armed bandits suspected to be herdsmen ambushed a joint security patrol team in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, resulting in several deaths and injuries. The incident occurred on September 19 at Agu Centre, where the attackers, equipped with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and heavy weaponry, engaged the operatives in an intense gun battle.
The targeted team comprised personnel from Operation Anyam Nyor, Operation Zenda, the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), and civil protection guards. Initial reports indicate that the commander of the civil protection guard was shot in the hand, while one police officer and two local vigilantes were killed on the spot. Later that day, additional bodies—two more police officers from Operations Zenda and Anyam Nyor, along with two vigilantes—were recovered and taken to the NKST Zaki Biam Hospital morgue.
Sources confirm that five police personnel remain unaccounted for, with an unspecified number of vigilantes also missing as investigations continue. The attackers set ablaze two police patrol vehicles, including a gun truck attached to Operation Zenda, and demobilized an SIS Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), though its crew was recovered safely.
Reinforcements from additional police tactical teams and troops of the Nigerian Army’s 401 Brigade have joined the operation, continuing to engage the militants. However, unfavorable weather conditions hindered the deployment of Nigerian Air Force support, complicating the response efforts.
This attack comes amid ongoing security challenges in the region, including related incidents where suspected herdsmen killed 16 people in nearby communities on the same day. Authorities have yet to release an official statement, but the event underscores the persistent threats faced by security forces in Benue State.
