US-Based Activist Barr. Franc Utoo Returns to Yelewata to Express Gratitude to Community One Year After Massacre

US-based Yelewata-born activist, Barr. Franc Utoo, has returned to his community in Yelewata, Benue State, to express gratitude for the support, solidarity, hospitality, and cooperation extended to him and the international community during the one-year remembrance of victims of the June 13th Yelewata attack.

Speaking through his representative, Mr. Andy Nomsoor, Barr. Utoo appreciated the people for their love and contributions, including the donation of land for the construction of a memorial monument, as well as moral and logistical support before, during, and after the unveiling ceremony and memorial mass.

Community leaders, including Elder Dze Fidelis (elders), Mrs. Christina Aga (women), and Mr. Simon Shagwa (youths), showered encomiums on Barr. Utoo for his courage in speaking out about the tragic incident, which they say was carried out by armed Fulani militia and claimed the lives of nearly 300 innocent residents. They commended him for amplifying the voices of victims and drawing global attention to the Yelewata tragedy and broader security challenges in Benue State, despite facing criticism, intimidation, and threats.

The community also used the occasion to express strong dissatisfaction with the Benue State Government’s handling of the security situation. They alleged that Governor Hyacinth Alia downplayed the June 13, 2025 attack by stating that only 49 people were killed, while community accounts put the death toll at nearly 300. Residents further claimed it took the governor several days to visit the community after the incident.

Additionally, they expressed disappointment over comments made by the governor during a visit by a United Nations delegation, where he reportedly suggested that residents should relocate and farm within Yelewata town such as growing tomatoes and other domestic crops while armed herders continue grazing on surrounding farmlands. The community described these remarks as insensitive given the prevailing security situation.

As part of the visit, Mr. Andy Nomsoor carried out door-to-door outreach to women and elderly residents on behalf of Barr. Utoo, conveying appreciation and distributing financial support to vulnerable members of the community. The community also appreciated the efforts of other supporters, including Mr. Judd Saul of Equipping The Persecuted, for providing relief materials, financial assistance, and infrastructure support.

The visit highlights both the resilience of the Yelewata people and the lingering tensions surrounding the 2025 attack and ongoing security concerns in the area.
