The Benue State Police Command has announced the commencement of a major enforcement exercise against vehicles using covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced number plates and unregistered vehicles across the state.
In a press release signed by DSP Udeme Edet, Police Public Relations Officer, the Command stated that the operation, which begins on Thursday, 18th June 2026, is in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiogbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to ensure strict, coordinated, and professional enforcement of the directive.
The police noted that the use of such vehicles by criminal elements undermines policing efforts, hinders crime detection and investigation, and poses a serious threat to public safety. Members of the public have been advised to ensure their vehicles carry valid, clearly visible registration number plates and that all vehicle documents are up-to-date and available for inspection.
The Command assured residents that the exercise is not meant to harass law-abiding citizens but to enhance security and strengthen law enforcement. It warned that any officer found engaging in extortion, harassment, or misconduct during the operation will face disciplinary action.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or vehicles to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.
