Benue State-born researcher, Peter Akor, has clinched the prestigious Judges’ Choice Award at the Glasgow Caledonian University’s (GCU) 2026 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition held in Scotland.
Hailing from Ejule Owukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, Akor impressed the judges with his presentation titled “The Minutes That Matter: Transforming Epileptic Seizure Care from Reaction to Prediction.”
His research explores how emerging technologies, particularly machine learning and artificial intelligence, can be harnessed to predict epileptic seizures before they occur, potentially revolutionising patient safety, treatment outcomes, and quality of life for millions living with epilepsy worldwide.
This latest international achievement comes barely three months after Akor secured significant recognition in the United Kingdom for his contribution to an AI-powered epilepsy prediction technology that attracted £250,000 in competitive government funding.
At the GCU final, held on the Glasgow campus and livestreamed online, Akor’s ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in a simple and engaging manner within three minutes earned him the top judges’ honour. The People’s Choice Award went to Kimia Rezaei Fard for her presentation on ankle instability.
As the Judges’ Choice winner, Peter Akor received a cash reward, the 3MT trophy, and the opportunity to represent Glasgow Caledonian University at the national UK Three Minute Thesis competition organised by Vitae.
This remarkable feat highlights the growing global impact of Nigerian talent in health technology and medical research, bringing pride to Benue State and the Idoma nation.
