In a surprising turn of events, Hon. Aondona Dajoh, the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, has stepped down from his position, effective August 24, 2025. The announcement, detailed in a personally signed letter, marks a significant shift in the state’s legislative leadership and has sparked discussions about the future direction of the Assembly.
Resignation in the Interest of Benue State
Dajoh’s resignation was formalized in a letter titled “Resignation as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly,” dated August 24, 2025. In it, he emphasized that his decision was made “in good faith and in the best interest of the state.” Expressing gratitude to his colleagues, Dajoh noted, “I want to appreciate my dear colleagues for the opportunity they gave me to be the first among equals.”
As the representative of Gboko West State Constituency, Dajoh reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving his constituents diligently in his capacity as a legislator. “I pledge to remain committed to my duties as a legislator and representative of Gboko West State Constituency,” he stated.
Context of the Resignation
The resignation comes amid recent political tensions within the Benue State House of Assembly. Just days prior, on August 22, 2025, the Assembly suspended four lawmakers—Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa)—for an alleged plot to impeach Dajoh. This move had intensified speculation about internal divisions within the House.
Despite these events, Governor Hyacinth Alia, through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, distanced himself from any involvement in the purported impeachment efforts. Kula’s statement underscored Alia’s “cordial and productive working relationship” with the Dajoh-led Assembly, emphasizing the governor’s commitment to supporting the legislature’s role in advancing Benue’s development.
What’s Next for the Benue Assembly?
At the time of this report, no official announcement had been made regarding Dajoh’s successor. The Benue State House of Assembly is expected to adhere to its standing orders to fill the vacant Speaker position, with a new leader to be named in accordance with legislative procedures.
The resignation has raised questions about the Assembly’s stability and its ability to navigate ongoing political dynamics. As the House prepares to elect a new Speaker, stakeholders are closely watching how this leadership transition will shape legislative priorities and the relationship with the executive arm of the government.
