Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has inaugurated a high-powered committee tasked with restructuring the mandates, supervision, and operational framework of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the state civil service.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday, March 16, 2026, at Government House, Makurdi. The committee, chaired by Deputy Governor Barr. Sam Ode, is expected to review the existing mandates of ministries, bureaus, commissions, and government-owned companies, and recommend appropriate alignments for more effective supervision and service delivery.
Governor Alia explained that the initiative forms part of his administration’s broader efforts to restore efficiency, strengthen institutional values, and enhance personnel quality for optimal performance in the civil service. He described the assignment as “very serious” and urged members to approach it with utmost diligence.
The committee will also examine the roles of political appointees, including Special Advisers and Assistants, identify overlapping functions within the system, and propose solutions to eliminate redundancies and improve coordination.
“This is a very serious assignment and I urge you to take it very seriously,” the governor said. “This idea is aimed at restoring standard operational procedures, strengthening institutional values, and enhancing the quality of personnel for optimal performance in the civil service.”
Responding on behalf of the committee members, Barr. Bernard Hom, SAN, appreciated the confidence reposed in them and pledged to carry out the task with dedication and thoroughness. He assured that the committee would deliver a comprehensive report within the stipulated timeframe.
The committee comprises distinguished indigenes of the state and is expected to submit its recommendations within two months for government consideration and implementation.
The move is seen as a key step toward modernizing the state’s bureaucracy, reducing inefficiencies, and aligning MDAs more closely with the administration’s development priorities.
