The leadership crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State escalated on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, as rival factions loyal to Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, held separate state congresses and announced parallel state executive committees.
The Akume-backed faction convened at Eunice Resort along Ankpa Road in Makurdi, where they reaffirmed the Austin Agada-led State Working Committee in a non-elective congress. The gathering was attended by prominent figures including Senator Titus Zam and former Minister of State for Health, Professor Iyorwuese Hagher. The process was monitored by a representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In his acceptance speech, Agada thanked supporters for what he described as a peaceful process, pledged loyalty to the party’s national leadership, and reaffirmed the faction’s commitment to unity and supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in future elections.
Meanwhile, the Alia camp held its parallel congress at IBB Square in Makurdi, where Benjamin Omale emerged as state chairman. Omale promised transparent and inclusive leadership while affirming support for President Tinubu and Governor Alia.
Addressing party faithful, Governor Alia described both congresses as peaceful and credible, urging members to view his election as a call to service. He reiterated his commitment to strengthening the APC in Benue and expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their support.
The parallel congresses highlight deepening divisions within the Benue APC despite repeated calls for unity. The development raises concerns over the party’s cohesion ahead of future electoral contests, with both sides claiming legitimacy under APC guidelines. Neither faction has conceded ground, and the national leadership is yet to issue an official position on the conflicting outcomes.
