Anti-human trafficking crusader Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya has raised the alarm over the alleged re-offending of Joy, a woman from Konshisha, who was previously involved in trafficking young girls to Libya.
According to Yaaya, Joy had earlier trafficked five girls from Konshisha and Vandeikya to Libya for prostitution. Her mother was arrested for conspiracy in the matter, but was later pardoned following pleas for forgiveness from Joy and appeals from some Benue people. Some of the rescued victims are still awaiting repatriation from the embassy.
However, Yaaya claims that Joy has allegedly returned to her criminal activities. A new victim, another Benue girl currently in Libya, reportedly contacted him, alleging that Joy deceived her with false promises of employment and facilitated her travel with the assistance of her mother and brother, Sunday, in Konshisha.
The situation took a tragic turn as one of the victims, a 15-year-old girl, reportedly died in Libya due to harsh conditions. Other victims who reported the incident allegedly went missing after a conference call with Joy, raising fears that they may have been relocated or silenced.
Yaaya stated that the responsibility lies with Joy and has informed the public of this development before revisiting the case and incorporating the new information.
The case has once again highlighted the persistent challenge of human trafficking in parts of Benue State, with calls for stronger vigilance and collaboration between security agencies and anti-trafficking advocates.
