A Nigerian professional footballer identified as Zaki Godwin, who currently plays in Benghazi, Libya, has come under intense scrutiny following explosive social media posts accusing him of involvement in human trafficking. The allegations surfaced prominently through posts by Yakubu Oyiza Hope, who detailed multiple claims against the athlete, describing him as someone who allegedly exploits his position and connections to smuggle young women from Nigeria, particularly from Benue State, to Libya under false pretenses.

According to the posts, Zaki Godwin is portrayed as a “poster child” within certain circles due to his football career, but is accused by others of causing emotional distress to numerous girls and engaging in trafficking activities that reportedly generate more income for him than his professional sports endeavors. One particularly highlighted case involves Fortune Adegboye, a student at a Federal university in Nigeria. The accuser claims Zaki attempted to persuade her to abandon her studies and relocate to Libya for what he described as a “better life.”

Further evidence shared includes a screenshot of a message from an account linked to Zaki Godwin, addressed to “Sis,” offering to sponsor 3-4 girls from Benue State (and Tiv communities) for “house girl jobs” abroad. The post promised salaries between #270K to #300K per month, requiring only a blood test result and transportation to move out of Benue State, with the sender claiming to handle the rest. It explicitly denied any connection to prostitution while including a stern warning about police involvement for those who misinterpreted the offer.

The social media campaign also features calls for intervention by the Nigeria Football Federation, with critics questioning how a professional athlete could allegedly seek to “enslave” young women for financial gain. Yakubu Oyiza Hope recounted personal backlash after an earlier confrontation, including being blocked by Zaki and facing criticism from his supporters, whom she described as protective of their “star boy.”
