A shocking case of human trafficking involving four young girls from Benue State has come to light, with allegations pointing to Terfa Joseph Matoto and his wife, Kudumyol Matoto, as key figures in trafficking the victims to Burkina Faso for prostitution.
The four Benue girls were recently rescued and repatriated from Burkina Faso after being trafficked out of the country by the couple, according to a detailed post circulating on social media. The primary conspirator in the operation was arrested at Adeke in Makurdi, prompting authorities to send a signal to the Konshisha Police Station for the arrest of Terfa Joseph Matoto.
However, reports suggest that a “language of compromise” was allegedly written into the process, raising questions about possible interference or delays in the arrest. Sources describe Matoto as a high-ranked individual with significant influence in the Konshisha area, often referred to locally as a “bad guy” with alleged involvement in criminal activities.
The matter has sparked strong reactions online, with one concerned individual issuing a direct warning to Matoto: “Matoto, stop stressing Elder, getting you and your wife is my top target now… you and your wife can only run now but not forever.” The post further noted that the arrested conspirator is expected to face charges in court today.
This incident highlights the persistent challenge of human trafficking in parts of Nigeria, particularly the cross-border movement of vulnerable young girls for sexual exploitation. Benue State and surrounding areas have previously recorded cases of trafficking networks operating between Nigeria and neighboring West African countries.
Authorities in Konshisha and Makurdi are urged to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, free from any compromise, to bring all those involved to justice and protect potential victims still at risk. The safety and repatriation of the four rescued girls remain a priority, and support systems for their rehabilitation should be activated immediately.
As the case develops, residents and rights groups are calling for swift action to dismantle any larger trafficking syndicate operating in the region. Further updates are expected as the arrested suspect appears in court and investigations into Terfa Joseph Matoto and his wife continue.
