At least six to eight people were reportedly killed last night in a violent clash between two rival cult groups in the High-level area of Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.
According to reports circulating on social media, the conflict involved members of the Vikings (DNKI) cult group and the Aye (NBM) confraternity. The bloody confrontation left several victims dead, with two of the deceased identified as Fabian and Jonah.
The incident was first highlighted by the Naija Contra platform, which confirmed the clash and urged residents to stay safe while calling for the rejection of cultism. A separate post by Felix Felix on Facebook described the grim atmosphere in Makurdi town following the attack, noting that “everywhere is quiet like nothing happened,” while expressing shock at the level of violence in the state.
Eyewitness accounts and comments on the posts suggest the death toll may be as high as eight, though official confirmation from security agencies is still pending. The posts have sparked widespread concern among residents, with many questioning how cult-related violence has become so normalized in Benue State.
Cultism has remained a persistent security challenge in parts of Benue State, particularly in Makurdi and other urban centers, where rival groups frequently engage in deadly territorial battles. The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for sustained security operations and stronger measures to curb the influence of confraternities among young people.
As of the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by the Benue State Police Command regarding the clash. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
More updates are expected as security agencies continue their investigation into the incident.
