Youths in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State have publicly accused security operatives, particularly the police, of failing in their duty to protect communities and even betraying residents amid ongoing attacks by suspected herdsmen.

In a strongly worded petition addressed to the Commissioner of Police in Benue State, the Agatu Youth Council expressed deep frustration and disappointment, alleging that security agencies have consistently ignored pleas for help while targeting community members who speak out against the violence.

The youths claimed that rather than confronting the perpetrators of attacks, security personnel have arrested and detained several community members who raised their voices against the killings and destruction of farmlands. Eyewitnesses reported that on January 25, 2026, during operations in Obagaji town, several youths were arrested and taken to unknown destinations, creating widespread fear and uncertainty among families.

“We are being arrested for speaking the truth,” the petition stated. “Those sent to protect us have failed us. They took our people to unknown destinations.” The group further alleged a pattern of selective enforcement, where victims and those defending their communities face harassment while the attackers continue to operate with apparent impunity.

The statement highlighted the persistent nature of the attacks, which have claimed lives, displaced families, and destroyed livelihoods in various communities across Agatu. The youths described the situation as a betrayal of public trust, warning that continued inaction and alleged complicity risk escalating tensions and eroding confidence in security institutions.

Local residents have expressed growing panic and insecurity, with many living in fear of both the attackers and potential reprisals from authorities for raising alarms. The petition called for an immediate investigation into the arrests, the release of detained individuals, and urgent reinforcement of security measures to safeguard lives and property in the area.

The development comes amid renewed concerns over farmer-herder clashes in parts of Benue State, where communities continue to demand stronger protection and accountability from security agencies. No official response has been received from the Benue State Police Command as of the time of this report, but the youths have vowed to sustain their advocacy until meaningful action is taken to restore peace and justice in Agatu.
