Human rights activist Ukan Kurugh has issued a stern demand for immediate action following a reported case of extortion at a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) checkpoint near North Bank, Benue State. Kurugh, known as the Voice of the Voiceless and Messenger of Necessity, is calling for the refund of ₦12,000 allegedly extorted from a young traveler and disciplinary measures against Officer Nasiru Haruna.
The incident involved a passenger on a Victoria Travels bus from Makurdi to Abuja, who was singled out by Haruna due to his dreadlocks and tattoos. Despite explaining he lacked a National Identity Card but was a Nigerian citizen and Benue indigene, the officer demanded payment, eventually settling on ₦12,000 after initially requesting ₦20,000. The money was transferred via Opay, allowing the victim to rejoin the vehicle.
Kurugh, who obtained the victim’s details, highlighted this as a clear abuse of power, citing multiple past reports of harassment and bribe demands at the same checkpoint, particularly targeting young Nigerians without instant identity documents. He described the incident as a stain on the NIS uniform and an embarrassment to the institution, urging the Benue State Command to investigate thoroughly and ensure justice.
After confronting Haruna, who initially denied the extortion, claiming it was a “gesture of appreciation,” the situation escalated with a background voice arrogantly dismissing the matter. Kurugh warned that without an official response from the Command, he will escalate the issue legally.
