According to a statement by the Acting Media Information Officer of OPWS, Ahmad Zubairu, the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence regarding the movement of suspected kidnappers around Jotar village near the Quarantine Checkpoint on July 2. Troops from Kyado intercepted the criminals, leading to a gun battle in which one suspect was killed while others escaped with suspected gunshot wounds. One AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines were recovered from the scene.
The military described the findings as preliminary, noting that investigations are ongoing. David Salifu, who served under former Governor Gabriel Suswam and later lectured at the Federal University, Wukari, was ambushed on July 2 while travelling from Wukari to Makurdi. He died on July 3 at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi.
Force Commander of OPWS, Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged them to sustain offensive operations against criminal groups in Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa states. He also appealed to the public to continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies.
The development is seen as a significant breakthrough in efforts to tackle insecurity along major routes in the state.
