Debate Intensifies Over Benue’s Hire-Purchase Motorcycle Scheme as Empowerment or Business

A fresh debate has erupted in Benue State over Governor Hyacinth Alia’s hire-purchase motorcycle programme, with critics and supporters clashing on whether the initiative constitutes genuine empowerment or a commercial business arrangement.

In a widely discussed post, Aoraaan Festus questioned the programme, arguing that there is a huge difference between one-time giveaways and sustainable economic empowerment. He noted that while free distribution may benefit a few, it does not create a lasting system to empower thousands of citizens.

In response, a counter-argument highlighted that the scheme is not charity but a structured economic intervention designed to help people acquire productive assets without paying the full cost upfront. Supporters stressed that hire-purchase and credit schemes are globally recognised tools for expanding access to equipment and vehicles for low-income earners.

The response further noted that the Benue State Government is not forcing participation, describing the programme as voluntary. It emphasised that development should be measured by opportunities for financial independence rather than short-term freebies.
