The Benue State Government has commenced the training of Marine Marshals as part of a strategic initiative to strengthen security in riverine communities and curb criminal activities along the state’s waterways.
The programme, which forms part of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s broader security architecture, seeks to address growing concerns over attacks and criminal operations allegedly perpetrated by armed herders and other criminal elements who exploit rivers and waterways for movement and escape. Areas such as Agatu, Buruku, and Guma Local Government Areas have been particularly affected.
According to Hon. Paul Bebe, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Marine and Blue Economy, the new security outfit will patrol major waterways, gather intelligence, and collaborate with existing security agencies to respond swiftly to threats. He disclosed that Governor Alia has procured and donated patrol boats to support the unit’s operations.
The Marine Marshals Unit will be equipped with patrol boats, communication gadgets, and other operational tools. Able-bodied youths, particularly from the most affected local government areas, have been selected for specialised training in surveillance and enforcement.
Residents have welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and crucial for achieving lasting peace and stability in the state. As preparations for the official launch advance, stakeholders hope the Marine Marshals will become a formidable force in the fight against insecurity while supporting economic activities along the River Benue and other waterways.
