A suspect in a human trafficking case, Mrs. Grace Akindeji, has been granted bail by the Department of Family and Gender, Benue State Police Command, Makurdi.
According to anti-human trafficking advocate Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya, the bail was granted on Friday, May 29, 2026, with strict conditions requiring her to produce the 7-year-old child, Miracle, whom she allegedly trafficked and sold to a family in Enugu.
Yaaya stated that investigations revealed Akindeji bought the orphaned baby for ₦400,000 in collaboration with others and handed her over without following due process, including proper documentation, registration, or government consent. She reportedly claimed involvement in informal adoptions.
The suspect is expected to produce the child within one week and report back to the Benue State Police Command on June 8, 2026, for further prosecution. Police will accompany her to Enugu to retrieve the child, who will then be brought back to Benue to tell her story in court.
Yaaya urged the public to remain calm, trust the judicial process, and allow the Gender Unit and the court to deliver justice in the matter. He also copied the Benue State Government and NAPTIP Nigeria in his update.
