Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has strongly condemned a deadly attack by suspected armed herders on farming communities in Apa Local Government Area, describing the incident as a heinous and unacceptable act of terrorism.
The assault occurred on Friday in the Akpete/Asaba community when herders reportedly invaded farmlands during cashew harvest season, targeting hardworking farmers from Ojantelle, Asaba, and Akpete who were going about their legitimate means of livelihood. Locals reported that at least 15 people were killed in the attack, while an earlier police statement indicated that six bodies had so far been recovered.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia expressed deep outrage over the killings, stressing that the victims were innocent citizens pursuing their daily farm work and did not deserve such a cruel fate.
“How can you come in and attack a people who were simply pursuing their legitimate means of livelihood? My people are hardworking farmers and do not deserve such a cruel fate,” the governor said. “I condemn this heinous act in the strongest possible terms. The killing of innocent Benue citizens going about their daily farm work is an assault on our shared humanity and will not be tolerated.”
Governor Alia directed security operatives deployed to the Akpete/Asaba axis to intensify efforts to rescue a little girl abducted during the invasion and to locate other missing persons from the affected communities. He assured residents that every effort is being made to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
“Do not lose hope. My administration is working closely with security agencies and community leaders to strengthen protection around vulnerable areas,” he stated. “We will not waver until our people are safe and can return to their fields without fear.”
The governor prayed for the repose of the souls of those killed and for quick recovery for anyone injured in the incident. He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives, property, and the livelihoods of farming communities across Benue State amid persistent security challenges.
The attack has once again highlighted the ongoing threats to rural farming populations in the state, particularly during harvest periods when farmers are most exposed on their fields.
