The Benue State House of Assembly on Friday commended Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for his prompt and decisive response to the recent violent attacks on communities in Kwande Local Government Area.

The commendation followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the member representing Kwande East State Constituency, Mr. Anyor Mato, during plenary presided over by Speaker Berger Alfred Embergba.

Mr. Mato informed the House that suspected armed militia herdsmen invaded Nyihhemba, Anwase, and Abande communities, killing 13 civilians and two police officers while displacing several residents. He noted that Governor Alia visited the affected communities shortly after receiving reports of the incident to assess the situation, sympathize with bereaved families, and personally reassure residents of his administration’s commitment to restoring peace.

The House condemned the attacks in strong terms and called on security agencies to redouble efforts to prevent future incidents, protect lives, and safeguard property across the state.

In a related development, the Assembly urged the state government to provide relief materials and financial support to traders affected by a recent fire outbreak at Aliade Market.

Meanwhile, two members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. James Abu Omoru (Apa) and Mr. Moses Egbobodo (Obi), defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during plenary. The defectors cited Governor Alia’s leadership style and that of the Speaker as key factors influencing their decision. Their defection increased the APC’s membership in the 32-member Assembly to 28.
