A young man narrowly escaped serious harm after allegedly mistaking the value of a foreign currency note and using it to settle a bill at a drinking spot in Makurdi, Benue State, in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to eyewitness accounts shared on social media by Terkimbir Joe, the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. when the unidentified youth visited a bar, confidently ordered pepper soup, several drinks, and even offered drinks to other patrons, believing he possessed a foreign currency note of significant value in Nigerian Naira.
Trouble started when it was time to settle the bill. The young man presented what turned out to be a Philippine currency note, which was discovered to be worth only about ₦2,000. The misunderstanding reportedly angered some individuals at the venue, leading to a physical assault on the young man before bystanders intervened.
Joe, who was present at the scene, said he stepped in to calm the situation using his familiarity with local street culture and persuaded those involved to spare the youth from further harm. He advised members of the public, especially young people, to always verify the value of foreign currencies before making purchases or financial commitments.
The incident has sparked discussions on social media about financial literacy, the importance of understanding exchange rates, and the need to resolve disputes peacefully without resorting to violence. Stakeholders have urged young people striving for success to remain focused and seek lawful solutions to challenges rather than making assumptions that could lead to embarrassing or dangerous situations.
