Tension is rising in Benue State following a strong message from the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), which has issued a 14-day ultimatum over unresolved salary arrears, staff screening delays, and welfare concerns affecting local government workers.

The union’s position reflects increasing frustration among workers who say they have endured months of uncertainty, unpaid wages, and repeated verification exercises without clear outcomes. For many affected employees, the issue goes beyond administration, it is about survival.

A major concern raised is the ongoing screening process reportedly affecting a large number of local government workers. While screening is often introduced to improve accountability and eliminate irregularities, critics argue that p rolonged delays have left many legitimate workers unpaid and financially strained.

Beyond salary concerns, attention has also been drawn to unresolved pension payments, delayed promotions, and the reinstatement of workers dismissed years ago. These long-standing issues continue to fuel dissatisfaction among workers who believe promises of reform should produce visible results.

The union’s ultimatum signals a growing breakdown in confidence between workers and authorities. Labour actions are often seen as a last resort, suggesting that patience among affected staff may be wearing thin.

For residents, the situation raises broader concerns about governance and public service delivery. Local government workers play a critical role in community administration, healthcare support, sanitation, and grassroots development. When welfare challenges persist, the effects are often felt across the wider public.
