A concerned Benue resident has raised alarm over the large-scale wastage of oranges in the state, questioning whether Benue remains the food basket of the nation or has become a centre of waste.
In a post shared on social media, the resident highlighted the sight of oranges dumped in large quantities along farm paths in the interior parts of the state, describing the situation as excess produce with nowhere to go. The writer lamented that waste has become the default option and asked what happened to preservation methods such as processing the fruits into juice.
The post warned that if care is not taken, there may soon be no food left in the basket of the so-called food basket of the nation, urging residents and stakeholders to preserve food before hunger becomes a bigger problem.
