A promising young Nigerian, Comrade Une Benjamin Agir, has been brutally killed in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State just one month away from completing his NYSC service.

What should have been a routine journey home turned into a nightmare. According to reports from Benue Sunrise Tv, Agir, an indigene of Tongov in Katsina-Ala LGA, was passing through Buruku on a rainy day when he stopped to take shelter at a local drinking spot. In good faith, he bought a drink for a man who offered to guide him to a safer place. Instead, that man led him into the hands of a local vigilante group.

What followed was a grave violation of human rights.

Without any credible investigation, Agir was falsely accused of stealing a motorcycle a claim he strongly denied. He reportedly presented his NYSC ID card and valid documents proving ownership of his bike. His pleas were ignored.

The vigilante group took the law into their own hands, subjecting him to severe beating and torture. By the time his condition became critical, he was taken to a police station and then rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

To make matters worse, the vigilante group initially misled his family, claiming he died in an accident. It was later revealed that he had been beaten to death. His personal belongings, including his motorcycle and ₦170,000, were taken from him. Though the bike’s documents have since been recovered, that does not erase the injustice.

Comrade Une Benjamin Agir was not a criminal. He was a young man of integrity, with no record of wrongdoin, a peaceful citizen who deserved protection, not execution.

We demand:

· A full and transparent investigation into the actions of the vigilante group in Buruku LGA
· Immediate prosecution of all individuals involved
· Accountability from any authorities who enabled or ignored this injustice

This is not just a personal tragedy. It is a stain on justice, a failure of systems meant to protect lives, and a dangerous reminder of what happens when mob action replaces the rule of law.

We call on the government, human rights organizations, civil society, and all Nigerians to ensure this case is not silenced or forgotten.

Justice for Comrade Une Benjamin Agir.
