Benue State to Recruit 12,000 Secondary School Teachers as Governor Alia Approves Major Education Drive

The Benue State Government has approved the recruitment of 12,000 teachers into the secondary school system through the Benue State Teaching Service Board. Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia gave the green light for the exercise as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s education sector by increasing the number of qualified teachers in public secondary schools.

The planned recruitment follows the administration’s earlier commitment to expand the public workforce and address manpower gaps in education. It comes on the heels of the employment of about 11,000 primary school teachers through the State Universal Basic Education Board during the first two years of the current administration.

Teachers remain at the centre of the education system. Adequate staffing helps schools maintain reasonable teacher-to-student ratios, improve classroom management and provide students with more effective academic support. The proposed recruitment is therefore expected to strengthen the human-resource capacity of public secondary schools across Benue State, particularly in areas where existing teacher shortages have placed additional pressure on available staff. It also forms part of the administration’s broader education-sector intervention aimed at improving teaching capacity, school infrastructure and the overall learning environment.
