The atmosphere at the Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (formerly Benue State University) was electric today as the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Benue State Chapter, flagged off the 2025 Library Week celebration.
Hundreds of librarians, information scientists, academics, and students converged at the University Library and Information Service Windows on American Unit for a colourful opening ceremony that featured lectures, exhibitions, and cultural displays.
The week-long event, themed around the role of modern libraries in digital transformation and community development, has brought together professionals from across the state and beyond to brainstorm on how libraries can remain relevant in an increasingly digital age.
A library science lecturer who spoke at the opening session stressed the need for massive investment in ICT infrastructure in Nigerian libraries, saying, “The library of today is no longer just about books on shelves; it is a technology-driven knowledge hub that must provide seamless access to both physical and digital resources.”
Attendees praised the Benue State chapter for choosing the newly renamed Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University as the venue, describing it as symbolic. The institution, recently renamed in honour of the late civic governor, continues to position itself as a centre of academic excellence in the North-Central zone.
Throughout the week, activities will include free library registration for students, digital literacy workshops, book donations to rural school libraries, and a grand award night to recognise outstanding librarians in the state.
For many participants, the celebration is more than just ceremonies; it is a reminder that in a country battling misinformation and low reading culture, librarians remain quiet but indispensable warriors on the frontlines of knowledge and enlightenment.
As one excited participant posted online: “Photo speaks. #teamhardwork indeed!”
The Nigerian Library Association Week continues until Saturday, and the organisers have extended an open invitation to members of the public to visit the university library and see firsthand the ongoing transformation of library services in Benue State.
In a time when screens often replace pages, events like this remind us that the library is not dying; it is evolving, and Benue is proudly leading the conversation.
