Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya, a prominent voice in the fight against human trafficking in Benue State, has clarified that he is not seeking any political office.
In a detailed statement, Yaaya addressed the common perception in Benue that altruistic efforts are often linked to political aspirations. He revealed that he began his crusade against human trafficking last year after discovering that Benue State has the highest number of such cases in Nigeria.
Initially, he adopted a discreet approach to protect the privacy of victims and provide assistance without unnecessary public attention. However, as cases continued to rise, he shifted to public sensitization and awareness campaigns through social media and other platforms.
Yaaya implored the public not to associate his humanitarian work with political interests. He commended the Benue State Government for establishing a strong committee against human trafficking, chaired by the Attorney General, and noted the efforts of the PSA to the Governor on human trafficking and child labor.
He emphasized that he does not solicit funds from the government or its appointees, relying instead on personal resources and donations from kindhearted individuals to maintain his independence. Yaaya stated that while he would welcome personal support from Governor Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, he prefers such assistance come from the Governor’s personal funds rather than official channels.
The statement underscores Yaaya’s commitment to combating human trafficking in Benue State through independent and transparent humanitarian efforts.
