An update has emerged on the violent attack on a truck driver at an illegal checkpoint operated by suspected thugs in the North Bank area of Makurdi, Benue State.

According to a detailed public post by Ukan Kurugh, three suspects arrested in connection with the incident are still being held at the C Division Police Station in North Bank. The suspects were expected to be arraigned in court today, January 16, 2026, following their detention.

The detained individuals reportedly named two other persons—known locally as “Lighter” and “Fast Finger”—as key figures responsible for systematically harassing and extorting truck drivers passing through Benue State. Kurugh stated that inquiries confirmed these individuals have been linked to numerous similar incidents and have caused significant problems for commercial drivers in the North Bank vicinity.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the proliferation of illegal checkpoints and criminal gangs targeting motorists, particularly heavy-duty vehicle operators, along major routes in the state.

Kurugh commended the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of C Division for what he described as a job “welldone” in apprehending the suspects and praised the broader efforts of the Benue State Police Command in Makurdi. He called on security agencies to take urgent note of these criminal networks and act swiftly to dismantle them before more drivers fall victim.

The North Bank area of Makurdi has long been identified as a hotspot for extortion and harassment at unauthorized checkpoints, often manned by armed youths or groups claiming affiliation with various interests. Such activities not only endanger lives and property but also disrupt the free flow of goods and contribute to economic hardship for transporters and businesses reliant on road haulage.

The outcome of any court proceedings against the detained suspects will be closely watched as the state grapples with persistent security challenges affecting daily commerce and mobility.
