Makurdi Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Joseph Keffii, has strongly condemned a vicious gun attack on prominent youth leader Mr. Benjamin Aondowase Terver, describing the incident as barbaric, senseless, and completely unacceptable.
The assault took place on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Mr. Terver’s residence in the Wuruukum area of Makurdi, where the victim sustained gunshot wounds to his hand and leg. According to reports, the attack occurred as Mr. Terver was preparing to attend an important security meeting convened by the Wuruukum Kindred Head, Chief Simon Ugondondotov.
The meeting had been called in response to the killing of three young men by suspected cultists just two days earlier, on January 7, 2026, an event that has heightened tension and fear in the community.
In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Security and Political Matters, Hon. Beetseeh Terhide Mark, Chairman Keffii expressed deep concern over the escalating wave of cult-related violence in Makurdi Local Government Area. He described the latest attack as part of a disturbing and dangerous trend that threatens the peace and security of the entire locality.
The Chairman called on youths across the area to completely reject involvement in criminal activities and cultism, emphasizing that such groups only bring destruction, pain, and backwardness to communities. He further urged residents and community leaders to remain vigilant, report any suspicious movements or activities immediately to security agencies, and work collaboratively to restore lasting peace.
Investigations into the attack are ongoing, with security operatives working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Mr. Benjamin Aondowase Terver is currently receiving medical treatment at a public hospital in Makurdi, where his condition is being closely monitored.
The incident has once again spotlighted the persistent challenge of cultism in parts of Benue State, prompting renewed calls for stronger community engagement, youth empowerment, and decisive action by security agencies to curb the menace before it spirals further.
Chairman Keffii’s firm condemnation and appeal for unity and vigilance reflect a growing determination among local leaders to confront and eliminate the root causes of such violence in Makurdi and across the state.
