In a significant move to foster youth empowerment and promote peace, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has called on the state’s young people to reject violence in politics and seize the abundant opportunities for development available under his administration. The appeal came during the official commissioning of the Governor Alia Youth House and the distribution of 4,000 oil palm stands to youth representatives from all 23 local government areas (LGAs) in the state.

The event, held on Monday in Makurdi, highlighted the administration’s commitment to sustainable youth development. Representing the governor, Deputy Governor Barr. Dr. Sam Ode emphasized that violence has no place in the current administration. “His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has directed me to inform all of us that violence in politics has no place in this administration. We are committed to fostering a peaceful environment where our youth can thrive,” Dr. Ode stated.

Dr. Ode further noted the inherent peace-loving and resilient nature of Benue youth, reiterating the government’s philosophy of “teaching youth how to fish” rather than providing short-term handouts. This approach was exemplified by the oil palm distribution initiative, which forms part of a broader “oil palm revolution” aimed at reaching all 276 wards in the state. “It aims to reach all the 276 wards of the state, providing sustainable empowerment that can lift our youth out of poverty and enable them to make independent decisions,” he explained.

The deputy governor also praised Hon. Terver Gbenda, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Organisation and Illegal Levies, describing him as a “grassroots mobiliser, passionate and committed to the cause.” Gbenda’s leadership was credited with organizing the event and mobilizing youth across the state.

In addition, Dr. Ode acknowledged the vibrancy of Benue’s talented artists and assured them of continued support for the creative industry. He promised to communicate their demands for musical equipment, additional operational vehicles, and the provision of youth offices across the 23 LGAs directly to the governor.

Benue State APC Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Omale, expressed gratitude to Governor Alia for his steadfast support of youth programs and commended his dedication to initiatives that improve livelihoods. Affirming the party’s strong confidence in the youth, Dr. Omale urged them to remain focused and not be swayed by superficial gifts. “Stay focused, and work diligently toward the governor’s reelection in 2027,” he advised.

Earlier in the program, Hon. Terver Gbenda delivered a welcome address, appreciating the governor’s efforts in empowering Benue youth through various programs. These include employment initiatives, subsidized farm implements, free oil palm stands for agricultural participation, and the donation of buses to facilitate mobility. Gbenda pledged the unwavering loyalty of Benue youth to the Alia administration and assured full support for the governor’s reelection in 2027.
