The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward improving healthcare in Benue State, urging the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), to establish a laboratory for the diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from Buruli ulcer. The resolution, passed on Thursday, highlights the urgent need for specialized medical facilities to address this neglected tropical disease in the region.
The move has been met with enthusiasm from constituents, with local resident D’naked Elder Zege’Orkwa expressing gratitude on social media. In a Facebook post, Zege’Orkwa praised his representative, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, stating, “My Representative Member Hon. Terseer Ugbor, thank you for this. I’m beginning to love the energy.” The post, accompanied by a photo of Ugbor, reflects growing support for the initiative.
Buruli ulcer, a debilitating condition caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, requires early diagnosis and treatment to prevent severe outcomes. The proposed laboratory aims to enhance local healthcare capacity and provide relief to affected patients in Benue State. This development marks a promising step toward addressing public health challenges and improving the quality of life for the state’s residents.
