Benue State Adopts Strategies to Enhance Tax System Efficiency

The Benue State Government has adopted strategies to ensure its tax system becomes fair, transparent, and growth-oriented. Governor Hyacinth Alia announced this on Wednesday at Nnan Hotels in Makurdi while declaring open a training on the Nigeria Tax Reform Act 2025, organized by the Benue State Internal Revenue Service in collaboration with T.A. Williams Firms.

Mr. Joseph Kwaghgba, head of the Internal Revenue Service, stated that the training aims to equip staff with necessary skills to chart a new course for tax administration in Benue and deepen their knowledge on administering taxes for economic growth. He called on staff and stakeholders to join hands to reposition the service for greater efficiency by embracing digital innovation to block leakages, thanking Governor Alia for creating an enabling environment for the staff to fulfill their responsibilities.

Represented by his deputy, Barrister Doctor Sam Ode, Governor Alia explained that his administration seeks to ensure fiscal transparency and improve internally generated revenue, noting that when people feel the impact of the taxes they pay, they would be willing to pay more. He charged participants to take the training seriously, harmonize the tax system, and develop policies that suit the people to transform the state’s economy.

Mr. Williams Tion, Chairman of T.A. Williams Firms, stressed the need for the state government to liaise with the Benue State House of Assembly to amend existing tax laws and reposition the Benue Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) to address economic challenges, attract foreign investors, and commended Governor Alia for implementing human-focused tax policies.
