The Benue State Government has introduced stricter rules for schools as the 2026/27 academic session begins. The new directives include a ban on mobile-phone use during school hours, a prohibition on extra lessons after regular classes, and restrictions on unauthorised access to schools by NGOs, individuals and other external organisations.
The government has also prohibited bullying, hazing, harassment and other forms of violence among learners, while warning parents against threatening or abusing teachers and school administrators.
Education Commissioner Margaret Adamu said the measures are aimed at improving discipline, protecting learners, strengthening school management and reducing unnecessary financial pressure on parents. Questions, however, remain over how some of the directives—particularly the ban on extra lessons and the authorised educational use of phones—will be implemented in practice.
