Herdsmen Kill Catholic Choir Master, Others, in Achakpa community Sparking Highway Protest

A devastating attack by armed Fulani herdsmen in the early hours of Saturday, September 20, 2025, has left the Achakpa community in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State reeling. The assault, which occurred along the North Bank-Lafia road on the outskirts of Achakpa, claimed the lives of a man identified as Tor Felafa, his son, and Mr. Francis Kulegwa, a senior choir master at Daudu Mission in the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi. Several others were abducted, with many narrowly escaping and some still missing.

According to an eyewitness, the victims were ambushed while tending to their farmlands behind the village—a tactic allegedly employed by the herdsmen after closely monitoring farm activities in the area. The senseless violence has ignited outrage among the local population.

In response, hundreds of angry villagers have blocked the busy Makurdi-Abuja highway at the Camp Garba-Atson-Abagena IDP Camp axis, bringing traffic to a standstill. Protesters, armed with placards and tree branches, have vowed to remain until justice is served. They accuse Governor Alia of remaining silent despite his election promise to protect their lives and property.

As of the time of this report, the demonstration continues, with the Makurdi-Abuja highway still at a standstill. The protesters’ resolve remains firm, carrying placards and tree branches as they demand action.
