There has been considerable debate over whether the Wurukum Flyover in Benue State is a single-lane bridge or a dual carriageway. From an engineering perspective, the answer lies in understanding the difference between the bridge’s structural components and its traffic-carrying elements.
The approved design, adapted from the flyover at Ramat Park in Benin City, shows that while the diaphragms and supporting members may appear narrow during construction, they are not the components that define the operational width of the bridge. The deck slab, which serves as the traffic-bearing platform, has been designed with adequate width to accommodate a dual carriageway arrangement.
Once all structural works, kerbs, parapets, asphalt wearing course, road markings, and the median are completed, the full bridge geometry will become evident, confirming its capacity as a dual carriageway.
