Communities in Otukpo, Agatu, and Apa Local Government Areas of Benue State are facing a heightened risk of violence following the sudden withdrawal of several security checkpoints along the Agatu-Apa-Otukpo corridor.
Multiple credible sources confirmed that several checkpoints were dismantled after the killing of a Fulani breeders’ association leader in Otukpo. Before the incident, there were seven active checkpoints between Agatu and Otukpo, but only two remain operational today. Mobile Police officers previously stationed at volatile flashpoints such as Ataganyi, Oweto, Ikobi, and Ikor have reportedly abandoned their posts or been withdrawn.
This reduced security presence has left communities including Ikobi, Akpete, Ogodumu, Igah, and several surrounding villages dangerously exposed. Residents and motorists fear that the security vacuum could be exploited by armed Fulani ethnic militias to carry out kidnappings, violent attacks on Idoma communities, and assaults on travelers along the corridor.
Local voices are urgently appealing to the Nigerian Government and Benue State authorities to immediately restore and reinforce security deployments across the affected routes. They are also calling on the international community to closely monitor the situation and press for decisive action before further bloodshed occurs.
This is a critical moment for vulnerable communities in Benue State. Without swift intervention, the risk of violence could escalate dramatically.
