The resignation comes hours after Atu Terver Joseph paid a courtesy visit to Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Dr. George Akume. In a Facebook post following the meeting, he described Senator Akume as “the most powerful Benue man alive with a good heart” and praised the warm reception he received.

Background and Context

Atu Terver Joseph had been a vocal supporter and mobilizer for Governor Alia’s administration. He reportedly left a job at Airpeace Airlines facilitated during the previous administration to take up the role. According to accounts circulating on social media and in local discussions, he served for over a year amid significant personal and financial challenges, including reported unpaid allowances, family hardships, and an earlier abduction incident from which he was rescued.

He faced intense social media criticism for his pro-government advocacy, particularly during periods of unrest such as protests following security incidents in the state. The aide had also previously dismissed members of his own team for participating in certain protests.

Political observers link the resignation to ongoing reported tensions between Governor Alia and his political godfather, Senator Akume, with realignments possibly intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections. No official reasons beyond the gratitude expressed in the letter have been publicly detailed by the former aide.45
