Residents of Gboko in Benue State were left in shock on Friday morning following the discovery of a newborn child’s lifeless body along Rice Mill Road in Gboko.
The disturbing incident was reported on Facebook by Ordolough Imoter Samuel, who posted graphic images of the baby lying in a shallow, muddy pool of water near discarded cardboard and debris. The post, which has garnered significant reactions, carried the caption: “A new born child found dead this morning along Rice Mill Road Gboko. What a world we live in,” accompanied by several sad emojis.
The images show the tiny, unclothed body of the infant partially submerged in dirty water, sparking outrage and sorrow among social media users. Many commentators expressed disbelief and called for urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death, with some speculating it could be a case of abandonment or infanticide.
Gboko, the headquarters of Gboko Local Government Area, has witnessed similar tragic discoveries in the past, highlighting ongoing challenges related to unwanted pregnancies, poverty, and inadequate social support systems for young mothers in parts of Benue State.
As of the time of the post, there was no official statement from the police or local authorities confirming the exact cause of death or whether any arrests had been made. Security agencies are expected to commence an investigation to determine if the newborn was abandoned or met with foul play.
This incident has once again drawn attention to the vulnerability of newborns and the need for stronger child protection measures, as well as increased awareness and support for women facing unintended pregnancies in rural and urban communities across Benue State.
Community members have been urged to provide any useful information that could assist authorities in unraveling the circumstances of this tragic event.
