Benue State Grapples with Renewed Violence as Governor Orders Security CrackdownuIn a bid to restore peace amid escalating insecurity, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has directed security agencies to launch a coordinated operation aimed at dislodging suspected armed herder camps hidden in forested areas across the state.

The directive comes in the wake of recent deadly attacks in Apa and Otukpo Local Government Areas that have left several residents dead and communities in mourning. Fresh violence was reported in Edikwu-Ankpali, Ikobi, and Adija communities in Apa LGA, as well as Upu village in Otukpo LGA, where multiple fatalities were recorded. These incidents have heightened tensions and renewed fears over the safety of rural communities in Benue.

Governor Alia described the situation as unacceptable, stating that criminal elements have taken advantage of the forested terrain to establish operational bases used for launching attacks on nearby settlements. He ordered security agencies to carry out an intelligence-driven crackdown to flush out the suspects and restore stability in the affected areas. The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with federal security agencies for coordinated operations across the state.

According to a statement by Chief Press Secretary Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor urged residents to support security operatives by providing credible information. He commiserated with families affected by the attacks and assured them of the government’s commitment to justice and protection. Residents have further been advised to remain vigilant as security operations intensify across identified hotspots, with assurances that efforts will continue until lasting peace is restored.

The state government has emphasized that the ongoing security operations will persist until stability returns to the affected communities. For now, Benue continues to mourn while hoping that swift and decisive action will prevent further tragedy.
