The Benue State House of Assembly has passed the Benue State Electricity and Power Management Agency bill into law. The bill, which seeks to regulate the energy sector in the state as well as address the energy needs in underserved and unserved communities, was passed on Friday during a plenary presided over by the Speaker Rt. Hon. Alfred Emberga.

The passage followed the consideration and submission of a report by the Chairman of the House Committee on Power, Renewable Energy and Transport, Hon. Moses Egbodo, representing Ohimini State Constituency. The bill, which had earlier scaled second reading in March, was subsequently committed to the committee for further legislative scrutiny. It underwent a detailed examination during a public hearing held on March 14, 2026, bringing together key stakeholders, particularly from the energy sector.

Presenting the Committee’s observations and recommendations, Hon. Egbodo stated that the bill when passed will improve electricity supply as well as attract investors to Benue State. He further explained that the bill will enhance social development and mitigate rural-urban migration in the state. The Committee also recommended the incorporation of the proposal of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) into the bill.

For business owners and the community, a state-managed electricity bill can bring some real perks such as stable power supply, revenue from bills that can help maintain and upgrade infrastructure, reducing outages and boosting business productivity, lower operational costs with a reliable power supply that allows businesses to save on generators and maintenance costs, economic growth through reliable electricity that can attract investments, create jobs, and stimulate local economies, and community development where revenue can fund community projects like schools, hospitals, and roads.
