Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has taken a significant step toward revitalizing the state’s agricultural and economic sector by inspecting newly delivered equipment intended for the revival of the state-owned rice mill located in Wadata, Makurdi Local Government Area. The inspection signals a renewed effort by the state government to restore the long-idle facility and position it as a catalyst for economic growth and women’s empowerment across the state.

The rice mill, which was originally built during the administration of former military governor Aminu Isa Kontagora, had remained dormant for several years. Over time, the once-promising facility fell into disuse under successive administrations, leaving a gap in the state’s rice processing capacity despite Benue’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s major agricultural hubs.

During the inspection visit, Governor Alia described the planned revival of the rice mill as a critical step toward stimulating local industries and expanding economic opportunities, particularly for women involved in small-scale businesses and agricultural value chains. According to the governor, bringing the mill back into operation will not only restore an important economic asset but also create new pathways for employment and enterprise development across the state.

Officials disclosed that once the installation of the equipment is completed, the facility will be managed by the Benue State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. Witnesses at the site confirmed that several machines had already been delivered, with installation expected to begin shortly as part of the broader rehabilitation effort.

Chief Solomon Lorpev, Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, noted that the initiative aligns with the administration’s broader agenda of promoting economic inclusivity and job creation. He explained that the project forms part of the government’s strategy to revive dormant public enterprises while strengthening sectors that can drive sustainable development.

Analysts believe that the restoration of the rice mill could significantly boost rice processing in the state, increase employment opportunities, and support women engaged in agribusiness. By improving local processing capacity, the project may also help reduce post-harvest losses and enhance the value chain for rice farmers across Benue.

Governor Alia also urged residents to support the initiative, expressing confidence that the revived facility would deliver tangible benefits for the state’s economy and particularly empower women entrepreneurs who play a central role in local agricultural activities.

The planned reopening of the rice mill represents one of the administration’s notable efforts to breathe new life into neglected public infrastructure while advancing policies aimed at strengthening the state’s economy and encouraging women-led economic participation. If successfully implemented, the project could mark a turning point in the revitalization of agro-processing in Benue State and reinforce the state’s position as a key contributor to Nigeria’s agricultural production.
