Benue State Governor, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on Thursday personally oversaw the disbursement of scholarship packages to children of security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty due to insurgency and banditry attacks.
The emotional event took place at Government College, Makurdi, where the governor also announced full sponsorship for 23 students from Notre Dame Secondary School, Mkar, who were affected by similar tragic circumstances.
The initiative is part of the state government’s renewed commitment to supporting the families of fallen heroes in the security forces and ensuring that their children are not denied access to quality education. Governor Alia emphasized that the welfare and future of these children remain a priority, describing the gesture as a small but meaningful way to honor the sacrifices made by their parents in defense of the state and nation.
During the disbursement, the governor interacted warmly with the beneficiaries, many of whom are still grieving the loss of their parents. He encouraged the children to remain focused on their studies, assuring them of continued government support throughout their academic journey.
The event drew large crowds, including students, parents, teachers, security personnel, and community leaders, all gathered to witness the governor’s direct involvement in the welfare program. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, hope, and renewed resolve to stand in solidarity with families who have borne the heaviest burden of the state’s security challenges.
This latest intervention builds on Governor Alia’s ongoing efforts to provide relief, empowerment, and educational opportunities to vulnerable groups across Benue State, particularly those impacted by violence and insecurity. The scholarships are expected to cover tuition, books, uniforms, and other essential educational needs for the beneficiaries.
