Construction activity on the long-awaited Wurukum Flyover in Makurdi, Benue State capital, has significantly ramped up, with the Federal Government deploying heavy-duty equipment and extending work hours to meet project timelines and quality standards.
The flyover, executed by the Federal Ministry of Works, is strategically positioned along the busy Wurukum axis—a critical transit corridor connecting Makurdi to other parts of Benue and neighboring states. Officials report that key milestones have already been achieved, signaling steady progress on the infrastructure project designed to alleviate chronic traffic congestion at the junction and improve overall road safety.
During an earlier site inspection, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, described the flyover as a special intervention personally approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He emphasized that the project demonstrates strong federal support for Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s development agenda, particularly in addressing urban mobility challenges in the state capital.
Residents and daily commuters have welcomed the accelerated pace of work, expressing optimism that the completed structure will substantially decongest the notorious Wurukum junction, shorten travel times, reduce accident risks, and stimulate greater commercial activity in the area. Many commuters who endure hours-long gridlock during peak periods view the flyover as a much-needed relief for Makurdi’s growing population and expanding economic demands.
The Federal Government has set a target to complete the Wurukum Flyover before the end of 2026, aligning it with broader national efforts to upgrade road infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and drive economic growth across the country. The project forms part of ongoing federal interventions in Benue, complementing state-level initiatives to modernize urban transport networks.
As work continues around the clock, local authorities and project engineers have assured the public of strict adherence to safety protocols and quality benchmarks. The flyover is widely anticipated to become a landmark infrastructure achievement for Makurdi, transforming one of its most congested corridors into a smoother, safer thoroughfare for motorists, pedestrians, and businesses alike.
