On January 1, 2026, the residence of Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), in Gboko, Benue State, came alive with color, rhythm, and cultural splendor as traditional masquerades and Tsue Tsele dancers delivered captivating performances to entertain the SGF and his distinguished guest, Professor Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation.
The event, held in the afternoon, showcased the rich heritage of the Tiv people through intricate masquerade displays and the renowned Tsue Tsele dance—a graceful and acrobatic style inspired by the movements of a cat, long cherished as one of the most skillful traditional dances in Benue State. Crowds gathered to witness the performers in vibrant costumes, moving with precision and energy that highlighted the agility and artistry embedded in Tiv culture.
Senator Akume and Professor Utsev were seen enjoying the festivities alongside other guests, smiling and engaging with the cultural troupes. The gathering appeared to be a warm, informal New Year’s reception at the SGF’s home, blending political camaraderie with deep-rooted traditions. Such displays not only entertained the high-profile visitors but also served as a celebration of Benue’s cultural identity at the start of the new year.
This joyful occasion underscores the enduring role of traditional performances in fostering community spirit and honoring leaders in the state. As Nigeria steps into 2026, events like this remind us of the vibrant cultural tapestry that unites diverse communities across the nation.
