Teacher and Wife Killed in Late-Night Armed Attack in Gwer West LGA of Benue State

A primary school teacher and his wife were killed in a late-night armed attack in Asase Ugbobede, Naka, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday, February 18, 2026.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that suspected gunmen entered the community around 8:30 p.m. through a bush path connecting Tse Adagbga and Tse Ankpev Road. The attackers opened sporadic gunfire, sending panic through the settlement and forcing many residents to flee for safety.

The victims have been identified as Christopher Mule, a teacher from Mbabwande Council Ward, and his wife. Reports further state that Mr. Mule’s second wife sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility, while other injured residents have since been discharged.

Residents noted that the attack occurred approximately 150 meters from a military checkpoint in the area. Soldiers reportedly intervened during the incident, which helped prevent additional casualties.

Authorities are yet to confirm the identity of the assailants or establish a clear motive behind the killings. No group has claimed responsibility, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the assault.

The community remains on high alert as security agencies continue their probe. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of rural communities in parts of Gwer West and the effectiveness of existing security deployments in vulnerable locations.
