The Executive Chairman of Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, Barr. Torseer Yina, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the council area with immediate effect following a breakdown of law and order.
The chairman announced the curfew on Thursday, October 8, 2026, as part of measures to contain violent protests and restore peace in Gboko. Yina also ordered the immediate suspension of the Executive Council of the Benue Motorcycle Hirers Association (BEMOA), Gboko branch.
The measures followed the death of a member of the association who was reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen. Following the incident, some BEMOA members took to the streets to protest the killing. The protest, however, was reportedly hijacked by hoodlums, leading to violence and the burning of two vehicles belonging to the Benue State Civil Protection Guards.
In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Gboko Local Government Security Council, Vincent Akaakohol Nev, the chairman warned that anyone found violating the curfew or engaging in acts capable of undermining public peace would face decisive action. The council clarified that individuals and vehicles engaged in essential services are exempted from the curfew.
Security agencies have also been directed to enforce the order strictly and ensure the protection of lives and property across the local government.
