Hold the panic, Benue students – your lecturers just handed Governor Hyacinth Alia a dramatic last-minute lifeline!

In a move that has everyone from Makurdi to Katsina-Ala breathing a huge sigh of relief, the Academic Staff Union of Tertiary Institutions (ASUTI) has SUSPENDED its planned indefinite strike… for now.

Yes, you read that right. The red flags are down, the placards are back in storage, and lecture halls might actually stay open past next week. But don’t pop the champagne just yet – this is less “problem solved” and more “final warning shot.”

The union dropped the bombshell on November 13, 2025, with a statement that basically reads like a ticking clock: Governor Alia has until November 25 – that’s just 12 days – to clear the mountain of grievances that have kept lecturers furious and students anxious for months.

We’re talking about REAL money and REAL frustration:

– Salary arrears that have been hanging like a dark cloud over lecturers’ lives.
– A pension law the union calls “haphazard and arbitrary” (diplomatic speak for “a total mess”).
– The long-promised 25% and 35% wage awards that somehow keep getting stuck in government bureaucracy.

The message from ASUTI is crystal clear: fix it by November 25, or the strike is back on – and this time, there’ll be no more extensions.

For thousands of students who’ve spent years watching their academic calendars get shredded by strikes, this feels like déjà vu with a twist. The suspense is killing us – will Governor Alia finally deliver, or are we just 12 days away from another total shutdown?

One thing’s for sure: Benue’s lecturers aren’t bluffing anymore. They’ve shown they’re willing to pause the chaos, but only for a government that finally keeps its word.

Tick-tock, Makurdi. The ball is in your court.
