Agatu Chairman Ejeh Mourns Five Siblings Lost in Boat Mishap, Urges River Safety Audit

A pall of deep sorrow has enveloped the Obagaji community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State following the tragic loss of five young siblings in a fatal boat mishap. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, saw the children—members of Mr. Moses Baba’s family—drown when their boat capsized while returning from their farm. The community buried the five children on Sunday, October 5, 2025, marking a somber day of mourning.

Residents have described the tragedy as one of the most agonizing to recently affect the community, underscoring the inherent dangers of local river transport. The bodies were recovered through the commendable efforts of local villagers who swiftly mounted search and rescue operations.

The Executive Chairman of Agatu Local Government Council and Deputy ALGON Chairman in Benue State, Hon. (Amb) James Melvin Ejeh, expressed his profound grief over the incident. Offering his condolences, he praised the tireless efforts of volunteers assisting in the search and recovery operations. Chairman Ejeh described the loss as “unfortunate, heart-wrenching, and painful,” extending his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family of Mr. Moses Baba and the entire Obagaji community.

In response to the tragedy, community leaders are now demanding immediate action to enhance safety along the frequently navigated river routes used by farmers and traders. This plea aligns with the Chairman’s commitment to ensuring the safety of his constituents. Hon. Ejeh has called for a comprehensive river safety audit to prevent future incidents, emphasizing the need for proactive measures.
